Oil Pressure loss after rebuild
We at Continental Diesel have noticed that when a do-it-yourself
rebuild has been done that the engine will have normal oil pressure at
start-up but after the engine has sat overnight there will be no oil pressure.
This is usually due to to a misplaced "O" ring that
seals the oil galley between the oil pump and the front cover. Sometimes
the "O" ring was missing completely! This causes all the oil to drain from
the engine while it sits and the oil pump may not be able to reprime itself
at the next start-up.
Check this "O" ring for diameter and installation.

Caterpillar 3304 Camshaft
& Balance shaft bearing Installation
Before installing any bearings it is very important
to make sure that the housing bore sizes are in tolerance:
Camshaft Housing Bore
2.5620-2.5640"
65.075-65.125 mm
Balance shaft Housing Bore
2.2766-2.2786"
57.826-57.876 mm
It is interesting to note that there are no oil holes
located in the second and third cam bearing housing bores. However there
is a hole in their bearing inserts ( this is non-functional ).
The front bearing has 2 oil holes and the housing
bore has a connecting groove for the lubricating oil galley. The front
bearing should have the 2 oil holes horizontal for proper installation
and the bearing joint pointed +/- 15 degrees from vertical.
Only the front cam bearing bore of the three receives
pressurized lubrication. Therefore it is important that when that bearing
is installed that there be a clearance of .020" or .5 mm from the front
block face.
The rear bearings receive only the splash oil for
lubrication. However it is still important that the hole in the bearing
be facing toward the oil pan.
In the case of the Balance shaft bearing it is vital
that the oil holes line up with the block holes because these bearings
do receive pressurized oil.
